A consumer behavior report on eco-friendly parenting was released in September 2007 by online price comparison giant PriceGrabber.com showing that "50 percent of online shoppers purchase eco friendly products because it 'reduces the impact on future generations.'" Spreading environmental awareness to the next generation isn't the only reason parents are buying organic, with the survey also showing that 15 percent of online shoppers are purchasing organic and environmentally-friendly products to "improve personal health."
"When consumers hear 'organic' they often automatically assume the product is 'healthy,'" says Erick Recors, Partner and VP of Sales with Organic Baby Wearhouse. "Unfortunately, as we've been seeing exposed in the news lately, this isn't always the case. Sometimes there are questions about how 'organic' something really has to be to be marketed as such, and sometimes organic products contain chemicals from treatments similar to their non-organic counterparts."
Organic Baby Wearhouse wants to help parents better understand what to look for when purchasing organic baby products, offering the following tips:
1. With recent claims of flame retardants in traditional baby mattresses potentially causing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), more parents are turning to organic baby mattresses (http://www.organicbabywearhouse.com). When buying an organic baby mattress, look for those made with 100 percent organic cotton or wool, without the use of harsh chemical flame retardants. Also choose crib mattresses that offer adequate support to avoid sagging.
2. When purchasing organic cotton baby clothing (http://www.organicbabywearhouse.com), bedding, or similar products, look for Oeko Tex 100 certified organic cotton, which isn't grown with synthetic fertilizers, toxins, or pesticides.
3. When choosing organic cotton products for a baby (from clothing to toys), ensure that the material hasn't been dyed or bleached with harsh chemicals. Look for un-dyed fabric or choose baby products using natural, non-toxic dyes.
