New DVD Video Lets Play Games Teaches Chinese Language and Culture...

Rhode Island educator and video producer Mei Mei Hu has released a new children's program on Chinese language and culture. The new DVD video, Let's Play Games with Mei Mei, is Hu's sixth in her Play & Learn Series, produced through her company, Mei Mei and Me. The video, filmed on location in China, serves to teach and entertain English-speaking children who want to learn Mandarin Chinese and become familiar with Chinese culture.

"Mei Mei's Let's Play Games is a great aid in learning Chinese. Children will find learning with Mei Mei a joyful experience that will cultivate their love for the Chinese language, as well as for the culture," said Li Wang, PhD, curator, East Asian Collection, Brown University.

Hu's primary mission in producing videos is to bring Chinese language instruction to a wider children's audience, particularly to Chinese-born girls adopted into English-speaking families. During the past fifteen years, many Chinese-born girls have been adopted into families in the United States, Canada, England and Australia. Her videos serve as a gateway into Chinese life and culture, which is critical for Chinese-born girls in developing a healthy, balanced identity. Hu previously produced the video, Let's Go to School with Mei Mei, where the setting is a Chinese elementary school.

"My 5-year old daughter is totally enchanted by Let's Play Games," said Rhode Island parent Angela Gora. "The games are fun and fascinating for children to watch and the exposure to Mandarin Chinese is priceless. For small children, there is no comparable tool for learning the Chinese language and culture on the market," she said.

Hu also hopes to reach children in English-speaking countries who may not ordinarily be exposed to Chinese language and culture. People everywhere have become more interested in learning about China since the country opened its borders some years ago to tourists, investors, researchers and others, said Hu. Additionally, according to Hu, China's recent economic growth and transition to a market economy has increased interest in Chinese language and culture. Just recently in Hu's home state of Rhode Island, two new Confucius Institutes were opened at Bryant University and the University of Rhode Island to promote the study of Chinese language and culture.
