Physician Specialty Needs Growing
Roush said LocumTenens.com's new specialty focus results from the firm's ongoing assessment of needs in the U.S. healthcare. "The number of surgical procedures will grow rapidly over the next 15 years-especially after 2011 when the first baby boomers turn 65. Meanwhile, residency programs continue to graduate a fairly constant number of surgeons," Roush said. One 2003 study at UCLA projected that from the time of an unlikely 10-percent increase in the number of surgery slots, it would take 20 years to increase the number of practicing surgeons by five percent, he noted.
Consistent with the UCLA study, statistics from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons indicate the number of orthopedic surgeons per 100,000 people in the U.S. grew less than one percent between 1990 and 2002.
Mobilizing to Meet Demand
"The demand for qualified general and orthopedic surgeons definitely is there," Drescher said.
