Thomas is not new to abstinence promotion. A few years ago, she founded Wait Wear, a nationally recognized apparel company promoting abstinence in all its products. She chose to establish myGPlife.com because, as she acknowledges, the choice of abstinence can leave individuals feeling alone. She states, "In a culture where literally anything goes and respecting our bodies is seen as somehow backward, I think that abstinence-dedicated individuals face a stigma, and this can lead to a feeling of isolation." myGPlife.com or "My Generation Pure Life," will compete with other social networking sites with the unique aim of helping these people break through the isolation. It will allow them to speak with others about the struggles, the roadblocks, and even the joys of the lifestyle choice they are making.
Content on the site will largely be generated by the users themselves, as they describe their various experiences. When the site launches, however, several groups will already be established, including: "Virgin Since Birth,"Saved, Single & Satisfied,"True Gentlemen" and "Wait Trainers".
Thomas hopes these will serve as a template as the site moves forward. "If you are a 23-year-old virgin, your experiences are going to be different from those of the 30-year-old single parent." While the goal of abstinence until marriage might be the same for all participants, each individual's experience will impact the groups they take part in or establish for themselves.
Despite what she sees as decline in the sexual purity of American culture, Thomas remains upbeat about her site's prospects. "There are people of all ages out there looking for the tools to lead a pure life. My website is just helping them get to the tool shed."
