Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Facilities Left with No OnSite Medical Care

An article in the Tampa Tribune on June 30, reports the second in a series of articles relating to Genesis Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. (See link to article in Tampa Tribune on this page).

Previously, The Tribune had reported the Genesis default on a state-held contract that left 175 Florida Department of Juvenile Justice youth without on-site medical or psychological services in 4 facilities, based in Tampa, St. Pete and Fort Myers, Florida. The State of Florida was forced to seek immediate help for this problem, and, according to that article, Genesis employees were left unpaid.

The current article reports that the State of Florida has retained Psycare, a Florida based firm, to provide stop-gap psychological services, but that youth are being bused to another facility for medical care. The Tribune did not report whether an M.D. is available for this care.

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is responsible for the oversight of Boot Camps and Residential Treatment programs for youthful offenders throughout the state and contracts with various private businesses to provide a portion of the services furnished at those facilities, including medical and psychological support services.

DJJ is currently seeking a provider to replace Genesis through its contracting and procurement procedures after the current agreement with Psycare expires.
