With most economists seeing hard times in the immediate future, many Christians might feel lost as they go through the experience of poverty for the first time. In a new historical novel about Saint Francis of Assisi, author Eric Engel, explores deliberate poverty and explains how to use economic stress as a tool of salvation.
Historically in America, when the economy goes down, alcohol sales go up. For a generation where reliance on God is practically non-existent, says Engel, this recession might be even
worse. Very few of today'ss young adults understand the concept of 'spoverty in spirit's, so a lot of people won'st know where to turn when their bank accounts begin to empty and their
homes go on the foreclosure lists.
Engel says that despite the economic downturn, the call to holiness is stronger than ever. Now is a time when we can make special use of our circumstances to develop a richer relationship
with God. People like Saint Francis embraced his poverty and used it to rebuild God'ss Church. By following in his footsteps, we can begin to reverse the culture of death in America and
restore our status as a nation under God.
In his novel, Engel retraces the hardships Saint Francis endured as he searched for the roll God had chosen for him. The kinds of trials Saint Francis went through are the same ones we go
through today. I don'st think people understand that we'sre not that far apart.
Engel'ss Novel, Francis The Beggar, takes a different approach to portraying history than most other historical novels. Writers generally try to take their readers into the past, says
Engel. But I wanted to put a different spin on it. I wanted to bring the past up to our present time. Instead of using the old style colloquialisms, I give the characters a modern dialog.
I wanted the reader to forget that they were reading about history, and think of the concept of holiness as a modern day phenomenon.
