The Archdiocese of Boston released its new web site, BostonCatholic.org (http://www.bostoncatholic.org), as a more modern, visually appealing, and informative online destination for the local Catholic community. Designed and developed by Verndale (http://www.verndale.com), the site features a fresh look and feel, new media components, and an Ektron Content Management System, helping to further the mission of the archdiocese and extend its communication strategy. The new web site incorporates all of the information found in the archdiocese'ss previous web site, but in a more streamlined and easy to use format.
A new multimedia section provides an interactive approach to communicating the Catholic message. Multimedia elements include Catholic video, picture, and audio content from related Boston
Catholic media outlets such as the CatholicTV broadcast station and The Pilot, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston. Users can also follow Cardinal Se's225;n and his life
as the Archbishop of Boston by reading his blog, or signing up for a weekly email from Cardinal Se's225;n and The Pilot.
Search and reference capabilities on the new site are enhanced to enable visitors to easily access a repository of information about the Catholic Faith in the Archdiocese of Boston. A
robust online directory includes the contact information of all the parishes, schools, priests, deacons, brothers and sisters in the Boston area searchable by name, city or zip code.
General queries are addressed by an integrated Google Search feature. In addition, BostonCatholic.org contains a new section, Being Catholic, which explains Catholic teachings and
doctrines and provides material about what is truly important about the Catholic Faith.
The new BostonCatholic.org represents a move of the archdiocese'ss virtual headquarters to a new site that is modern and better suited to sharing the story of the Church, said Scot
Landry, Archdiocesan Secretary for Institutional Advancement. We view this as an important resource for everyone across the Archdiocese of Boston who wants to learn more about our
Catholic faith.
In designing BostonCatholic.org we researched all the 195 diocesan and archdiocesan web sites in the United States, Landry continued. We sought to imitate and improve upon the best
practices to give Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston the best web site in the country.
Verndale'ss goal in developing BostonCatholic.org was to clearly communicate the message of Cardinal Se's225;n and the Archdiocese of Boston in a visually appealing, easily navigable
format, said Chris Pisapia, Managing Director of Technical Consulting at Verndale. The integration of a content management system was essential to streamlining the site'ss vast library of
contact, news, media and service information, and also it allows the site to remain scalable to the future needs of the archdiocese.
