Held on 29th and 30th July 2006 on Cark Airfield, Flookburgh, the Cumbria Steam Gathering is a colourful and noisy weekend summer event, with more than 1,200 classic exhibits and
displays, including a whole host of entertainment and vintage transport favourites as diverse as tractors, majestic steam engines, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, cars and cycles.
A popular highlight are the arena displays. Two arena areas bring a constant parade of vintage treasures and brilliant shows along with fantastic commentary. For the more adventurous,
there'ss the opportunity to drive a traction engine and have a ride in a helicopter. Families can enjoy model sailing boats and the miniature railway, which operates throughout the
event.
As well as the popular auto jumble and fantastic craft demonstrations (including a Blacksmith demonstration) there's8217;s the opportunity to start your Christmas shopping amongst the
hundreds of trade stands, selling everything from souvenirs and memorabilia, to exquisite hand made greetings cards.
This year'ss headlining entertainment is the Portsmouth Area Volunteer Cadet Corps Field Gun Display Team. These young cadets (9 's8211; 16 years old), compete to beat the clock,
assembling their military equipment and racing over the challenging obstacle course. Elsewhere, crowds of families will be enjoying the wonderful sheep display from charismatic New
Zealander, Richard Savory and the exciting chain saw carving display.
At the rear of the ploughing and cultivating display, is the huge kite flying display featuring hundreds of kites from China and Japan, some will even lift a man off the floor!
Tim Holt from Hutton Roof near Carnforth is one of the club's8217;s founding members. He was chief steward at the very first Cumbria Steam Gathering and is now the event's8217;s main
organiser, heading a team of 10, which themselves lead almost 500 volunteers.
Tim said, 's8220;My enthusiasm for this wonderful event has never waned, even after all these years. Each event is bigger and better than the last. It's8217;s a noisy, jolly atmosphere
with plenty to see and do and this year we have a fantastic selection of exhibitors. The added attractions like the traditional fair, miniature car racing and vintage vehicles, along side
the auto jumble and tractor jumble, make it a really vibrant event.'s8221;
