Historic Home Opens Doors for 48th Year

Leighton Hall, near Carnforth first opened to the public in the summer of 1958 & is now putting the finishing touches on its plans for 2006.

Although closed to the general public from October to April, the historic home of the world famous Gillow furniture making family, has been welcoming groups and private bookings all year round. Nonetheless, there is still work to be done preparing for the summer season crowds.

Leighton's8217;s car park and coach park has had a thorough upgrade thanks to a £4,500 grant awarded from the North West Development Agency. The coach park has been retarmacked, there are new cattle grids and the tracks that run onto the terrace have been recemented. Costing over £9,000, work is also being carried out to completely update the car parking area in the parkland as well as modernizing the approach to the Hall. Underground drains now mean firmer foundations and solid parkland on which to drive and park.

Suzie Reynolds said, 's8220;As time goes on, the Hall is busier and busier through the winter with group and school bookings and of course fabulous weddings. We are always looking for ways to make it easier to visit Leighton and the new parking facilities should do just that! I love this time of year when we are putting all the final touches together and getting everything ready. We can's8217;t wait to open our doors to our visitors on 30th April.'s8221;

This year's8217;s special events calendar starts on the 9th July with the Lakeland Classic Car Rally. The hugely popular Festival Players return to Leighton's8217;s magical gardens for the annual Shakespeare In The Garden concert. This year sees their highly acclaimed production of Hamlet. The fantastic Craft and Food Fair return for two days over the 9th and 10th September and the events programme draws to an Autumnal close with the Dolls house and Miniatures Fair on 15th October.

Suzie said 's8220;As well as the special events, our enthusiastic guides take tours of the house each afternoon, whilst our magnificent birds of prey are flown to the delight of our visitors (weather permitting). The grounds and gardens have been well tended over the winter months so they should be a wonderful place for a stroll this summer's8221;.

From 30th April 06, the house and gardens will be open daily from Tuesday to Friday, 2pm 's8211; 5pm (also Bank Holiday Sundays & Mondays) until September 30th. August only: from 12.30pm to 5pm, Tuesday 's8211; Friday & Sunday (also Bank Holiday Monday). Admission is £5.50 for Adults, Children £4.00 and Senior Citizens £5.00. A family ticket (for 2 adults & up to 3 children) is £17.00.
