The Historic Speedway Group (HSG) of Hillsborough, NC has taken on the awesome task of preserving an important piece of NASCAR history. The Occoneechee Speedway was the location for the 3rd NASCAR sanctioned Strictly Stock event on august 7, 1949. The 9/10 mile dirt track offered some of the most exciting and memorable racing for NASCAR'ss elite series until its closing in 1968. With names like the Flock brothers, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Ned Jarrett, Cotton Owens, David Pearson, Junior Johnson and many more making their mark at this historic oval, one has to feel the passion behind the effort of the HSG.
This weekend, September 26 and 27, 2008 marks the 2nd Annual Celebration of the Automobile and RacersReunion at the site of the Occoneechee Speedway. After a reported turnout of over
40,000 for last years inaugural event the HSG is poised to put on an expected record-breaking event this year. With an antique car show and a stellar cast of racing veterans on hand for
the ceremonies, visitors will not leave unfulfilled from this years event.
This is going to be a huge event, said Jeff Gilder, creator of RacersReunion.com. Cotton Ownes, Junie Donlavey, Ned Jarrett, David Pearson, Marvin Panch, Rex White, and many more of the
legends of NASCAR are expected to be there. We are very excited to have been invited to participate in this years event. We commend the Historic Speedway Group for their efforts in
preserving this very important piece of racing history.
