Interactive Statistics Tutorial by Kognito Solutions use Cartoons and Humor to Teach College Students
May 5, 2005 -- Kognito Solutions, an award-winning e-learning company, announced today the release of an online, interactive, cartoon-based guide to help college students learn statistics. A demo of the guide can be viewed at

What sets this online guide apart is its innovative use of cartoons and humor to help students master the often intimidating subject of statistics. For example, throughout the guide's five modules, students see statistics being used to test squirrel intelligence, help aliens decide whether or not to invade Earth, and help a 1970's disco king decide if it's profitable to open a record store on Staten Island.
"We chose to use this approach because cartoons and humor tend to hold people's attention and put them at ease, even through difficult and challenging material," said Kognito's Director of Research and Development Ralph Vacca. "We are really pleased with the response we've gotten."
The five modules, each 5-20 minutes long, cover topics such as standard deviation, sampling distribution, hypothesis testing, and the test of two means.
The animated modules were developed as supplementary materials for Baruch College of the City University of New York. This April, the guide was unveiled for beta testing in a graduate level marketing research course conducted by Professor Kapil Bawa, who also acted as the subject matter expert for this project.
"I think it is fantastic!" wrote one student on the tutorials' anonymous online feedback forum. "I can see how it would be very clear for people who did not have a good knowledge to understand the concepts... Great work!"
In fact, close to 70% of the students in the class said tutorials like this definitely help them do better in the course; and over 95% of students rated the tutorials as "good" or "excellent."
This is not the first course at Baruch College to benefit from tutorials developed by Kognito. Students in introductory finance, biology, and chemistry classes also have specialized tutorials that help them master difficult concepts.
"I am absolutely delighted with these tutorials," said Professor Bawa. "By taking the 'fear factor' out of statistics, they make the subject so much more accessible to students. Explaining statistical concepts is not easy, and I think Kognito has come up with an innovative and creative approach that is extremely effective."
