George Mason University'ss College of Visual and Performing Arts Presents Arts, By George! Fundraiser Features Michael Feinstein September 30, 2006

Inaugural scholarship benefit event featuring tours of the performing arts buildings on George Mason University'ss Fairfax campus as well as concert and reception with the artist, Michael Feinstein, September 30th.


Fairfax, VA August 26, 2006 -- George Mason University's8217;s College of Visual and Performing Arts and Center for the Arts announces an inaugural benefit designed to raise funds for arts scholarships, Arts, By George! A premier showcase of young artists at work, its centerpiece is a concert by top Broadway vocalist and arranger Michael Feinstein. Co-chaired by Senator and Mrs. John Warner, and generously supported by many local metro area donors and businesses, Arts, By George! is held on Mason's8217;s Fairfax campus, beginning in the Performing Arts Building and culminating in the spacious, state-of-the-art Center for the Arts Concert Hall on the evening of September 30, 2006.



Arts, By George! is a unique night of music, dance, theater, visual art and creative cuisine, celebrating the arts at Mason. Audiences embark on a their journey from Mason's8217;s Performing Arts Plaza after receiving an easy-to-follow guide. As the route unfolds -- winding through the university's8217;s studio environments -- patrons sample delicacies from around the world and enjoy brief artistic presentations by Mason students. These young artists are performing some of their 's8216;works in progress's8217; in all disciplines. At 8 p.m., guests arrive in the Concert Hall for a performance by four-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein, accompanied by a six piece live combo, in a program of great American music. After the performance, join Mr. Feinstein on stage for a champagne and dessert reception.



Michael Feinstein is 's8220;America'ss Ambassador of Song,'s8221; a pop vocalist, composer and arranger who began his career as Ira Gershwin'ss assistant. For six years he held this position, allowing him complete immersion into the life of one of the legends of American music, and access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, which he has since recorded and performed.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts exists to create an academic environment in which the arts may be considered both as individual disciplines and as interdisciplinary forms that strengthen each other. Believing that an education in the arts is deepened by regular contact with the work of distinguished visiting artists, the College draws on a variety of professional presenting and producing units where artists from across the country and around the world regularly perform, give master classes, work with students during extended residencies, and interact with the community in a variety of other ways. These programs at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall, TheaterSpace, Galleries, Harris Theater, and other venues, provide a diverse selection of challenging and entertaining cultural experiences for the University community, as well as Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area. The College houses four academic departments: Art and Visual Technology, Dance, Music and Theater.
