Fax Broadcast Expansion of Do Not Call Register Will Hurt Small andMedium...

Imagine that you have just been made redundant and want to start an office cleaning business. Money is tight and you have to weigh up how many months of mortgage and food money you can stash away, but still have a fair go at making a living. A fax broadcast going to every business in your postcode may cost as little as $100 and takes only a few minutes. A direct mail campaign, newspaper ad, leaflet drop or a listing in a local directory could cost five times that with less of a response.

A great number of small businesses rely on fax broadcast as being the most cost efficient way of getting their message out to a wider audience. Said Dave Hutchinson, General Manager with Australian communications company OzMedia. A fax broadcast (http://www.ozfax.com.au) can cost anything from 10c to 15c per recipient and is usually always cheaper than even the cost of a local phone call and definitely much cheaper than direct mail. He added. When you are a small business working on a shoestring marketing budget, it'ss important to get the best result per dollar that you can.

Fax broadcast is also used by a large number of schools and other organisations to create awareness of upcoming community events and even to find locum medical practitioners in metropolitan areas to work in regional Australia.

The proposed bill also hints at a loophole for telemarketers when calling other businesses. A major concern would be that more jobs would simply be going overseas as Australian companies try to eek out dollar savings with cheap call centres in Bangladesh or the Philippines to prop up their businesses.

I do not believe that any fax broadcast company wants to send to people who get offended receiving unsolicited faxes. As a service provider we welcome the idea of a central 'sDo Not Call Register's for fax, however the idea that expansion of the register would cost millions of dollars is frankly ludicrous. Commented Hutchinson. You could easily build an opt-out system for under $50,000, so we have great concerns that this move may be another way for the government to tax the fax broadcast industry, which in turn would have no choice but to pass the cost on to its customers. He said.

Any move to change the register would have to be extremely well thought out and with genuine and careful consultation with the industry. Said Hutchinson Economically we are living in extremely uncertain times and the last thing the government should be doing, is making any move that will hamper Aussie businesses selling to each other.
