Jorge Cuadros, OD, PhD has signed on to read digital retinal images for Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in retinal health assessment for diabetics. Dr. Cuadros is Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Clinical Informatics Research at UC Berkeley'ss Clinical Research Center. He has been a pioneer and national leader in retinal assessment for diabetic patients, and is the creator of the EyePACS telemedicine program.
The Retasure's8482; solution developed by Digital Healthcare provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients's retinal images
during a three to five minute procedure. Images are transmitted over a secure network to an accredited reading center. Certified readers, like Dr. Cuadros, review the images and consult
with the original physician. Many diabetic patients do not see an eye-care specialist until they actually experience vision loss, states Dr. Cuadros., Our goal is to diagnose and treat
patients early, which is why we bring this technology into the primary care setting.
Scott Sanner, Vice President of North American Operations for Digital Healthcare, agrees. The National Eye Institute states that diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness
among working age adults in America, he says, but fewer than half of all diabetic patients are assessed annually for retinopathy, despite the high frequency of this complication.
In partnering with Dr. Cuadros, Digital Healthcare will gain valuable experience and expertise for its growing market in California and other western states. Retasure was introduced to
the US market in 2007, and has since been adopted by more than 900 physicians in over 90 practices. Currently, Retasure'ss distribution extends to 19 states, and Digital Healthcare
expects to see significant growth in medical practices in the western US.
Digital Healthcare'ss Retasure solution offers several advantages for primary care and endocrinologist physicians and their patients: It can be operated by non-clinicians; it is
non-invasive and requires no dilation; and it obtains exceptionally high-quality digital images of the retina. This FDA-approved technology is used by a broad range of doctors and
facilities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom, including leading hospitals and research centers, primary care groups, private ophthalmology and optometry groups, family
practice residency centers, and internal, multi-specialty and endocrinology groups. More than a million patients around the world have received a retinal health assessment using Digital
Healthcare software.
