ATL Inc Engineer Is Recognized for Professional Excellence

January 21, 2005 -- ATL, Inc. has announced the promotion of Dwayne Smith, P.E., to Geotechnical Manager after recently completing the Professional Engineering Licensing Program in Arizona.

Dwayne Smith, P.E., a partner with ATL, Inc., recently obtained his Professional Engineering License as administered by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration. Only licensed engineers may prepare, sign and seal, and submit engineering plans and drawings to a public authority for approval and the title engineer itself may only be used by those duly licensed.

Only about 20% of the nation's engineers achieve this designation; and, the rates of both exam applicants and passing test takers are steadily declining. In a profession that directly affects public safety, environmental issues, and product design defect, it is critical that those in practice have at least met certain requirements of competence, ability, experience, and character. Professional Engineer licensing demands proof of such traits and is regarded within the industry as an indicator of the highest caliber of engineering professionals who are most worthy of societal trust.

Smith graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis in structural engineering. To earn his Professional Engineer registration, Smith was required to graduate from an ABET-accredited engineering school, pass an 8-hour-long Fundamentals of Engineering exam, gain four years of work experience under the guidance of other licensed engineers, and pass the 8-hour-long Principles and Practice of Engineering exam within a specific engineering discipline. Smith then applied for licensure with the appropriate state board, which is composed of licensed professional engineers with proven ability and experience. ABET stands for Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the nationally recognized accrediting organization for engineering and technology curricula.
