Chevrolet Starts over from the Ground up
May 20, 2005 -- Chevrolet has kicked off 2005 by replacing the longest continuously-running nameplate in its lineup, the Cavalier. Taking its place is the Cobalt, an all-new car based on all-new architecture known by GM insiders as the "Delta" platform. Among the obvious improvements is an interior upscale enough to pass for a Buick's. Front and rear seats have been firmed up and improved and the ride has been quieted down. The suspension is all-new and the steering is now electric.
The Cobalt's engine is GM's "Ecotec" 2.2-liter 4 with 145 horsepower - above-average for the class. 5-speed manual is standard, 4-speed automatic optional. In another league altogether is the Cobalt SS, with a 2.0 liter engine supercharged to 205 horsepower - good enough to launch it to 60 MPH in a tick over six seconds. Both Cobalts are available in dealerships now and come with attractive rebates that vary by region.
