New Web Site Showcases Dedication Contributions of State Dental Boards

Although they are guardians of our nation's oral health, the men and women who serve on state dental boards are seldom accorded the credit they deserve.

Now a new web site aims to highlight the many positive contributions made to public health by the members and staff of state dental boards. Launched February 1st, www.a4da.org will regularly cover the world of statewide dental regulation and inform residents how they can take advantage of the many regulatory protections afforded them.

Americans for Dental Access (A4DA), a three-year-old, not-for-profit dental health advocacy group, is underwriting all costs associated with the new web site.

"In the pantheon of unsung heroes reside many state dental board members who work for years on end to protect their states' residents," says Erin Isaacs, a spokeswoman for A4DA. "Citizens have an expectation that when they access the dental health care system they will get quality care. Now they will better understand why that is true."

In addition to profiling dental board members and the actions taken by various state boards, A4DA says it will also highlight some of the best consumer-friendly guidelines proposed by professional groups, such as the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Academy of Periodontology.

"Most board members have three goals in mind: 1. Keep dentistry safe. 2. Make it accessible. 3. See to it that it remains affordable," says Isaacs. "When one state takes innovative steps toward any of these three goals - or a professional association adopts positive guidelines, our site will make certain that state board members are kept informed."

Isaacs says that state dental board members often do struggle to stay well-informed on the many matters of public interest that come before them.

Members and staff of any state dental board are encouraged to submit their newsworthy items for posting on the A4DA.org web site. Releases and story ideas should be emailed to news @ a4da.org. To contact A4DA directly, phone 515-974-6722 or visit www.a4da.org.
