March 25 2005 Invibio a leading provider of biomaterial solutions to the medical device market today announced BEGO Implant Systems has selected PEEKOPTIMA polymer for the development of
its Sub Tech Provisional Abutments and Individual Healing Posts BEGO Implant Systems based in Bremen Germany is a leading provider of implants to the prosthodontics industry
During one stage surgical procedures a titanium implant is placed into the patient's jaw bone and a provisional abutment is placed into the well of the implant The provisional abutment
will assist in the healing formation and maintenance of the soft tissue over the implant while bone integration occurs It will also ensure the gum line will heal properly and look natural
once the final abutment is tapped into the implantOnce the implant is completely integrated into the jaw bone the provisional abutment is replaced with a permanent abutment which is then
cemented to a crown
One of the key advantages of using an abutment developed from PEEKOPTIMA polymer is that dentists can sculpt the abutment to the correct shape to ensure it is flush with the gum line
prohibiting the soft tissue from receding under the abutment This is critical to the healing process and to ensure the final abutment and crown assembly will fit properly in the gum line
This chairside adaptability is not possible with titanium abutments
During two stage surgical procedures a titanium implant is placed into the patient's jaw bone and a healing post is initially tapped into the implant well The tissue surrounding the
healing post is then sutured to protect the implant site while bone integration occurs Once the bone has healed properly the healing post is replaced with a final abutment which is then
cemented to a crown
BEGO selected Invibio's PEEKOPTIMA polymer because of its combination of strength biocompatibility and chairside adaptability The strength of the abutment and healing post is critical
because they are load bearing applications and act as a patient's tooth during the healing process before the crown is mounted Additionally the material's color closely matches that of
natural teeth
The dental industry has expressed considerable interest in PEEKOPTIMA polymer as an alternative to traditional metallic and ceramic materials in the development of permanent dentures and
implants because it offers a premium metalfree solution said Michael Callahan President of Invibio
Invibio's PEEKOPTIMA polymer is a thermoplastic designed for medical device applications requiring blood or tissue contact of more than 30 days Its combination of strength stiffness and
toughness together with biocompatibility and the ability to be repeatedly sterilized without the degradation of its mechanical properties make it ideally suited for in vivo medical device
applications
The material is used in the development of cardiovascular orthopedic neurological dental and arthroscopy applications

About BEGO Semados GmbH
BEGO Bremer Goldschlgerei has stood for innovations and dental competence for over 111 years In 1990 BEGO Semados GmbH was established and commissioned to develop the SEMADOS implant
system Two important premises were to integrate the system idea pursued actively by BEGO into an implant system and to offer the market a highly functional denture system capable of
covering all indications By looking back at 30 years of excellently documented international implant history it was possible to analyze key design disadvantages and disadvantageous
structural features of existing implant systems Since the patented SEMADOSS implant was introduced on the market in 1993 the implantological team has had a multiindication clearly
structured and above all economical implant system at its disposal that leaves nothing to be desired
