Essex Dental Benefits Now Covering VELscope Oral Cancer Exams



LED Dental Inc. today announced that Essex Dental Benefits has begun offering coverage for dental exams utilizing its VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System.



Wellness screenings, such as oral cancer examinations, have been shown to help improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs, said Ziad Rubaie, executive vice president, Essex Dental Benefits. We added oral cancer screening to our dental plan design options because early detection is the key to fighting this disease. Essex Dental is pleased to offer this coverage as part of our commitment to our members.



Due in large part to the growing recognition of the link between the human papilloma virus and oral cancer, more and more dental insurers are realizing the wisdom of providing coverage for oral cancer examinations, said Dr. Ralph Green, president and CEO of LED Dental parent, LED Medical Diagnostics. We are delighted that Essex Dental Benefits has joined a growing list of dental insurers that are covering the cost of VELscope system exams and hence encouraging both consumers and dental practices to look for oral cancer at early and even precancerous stages.



The VELscope system, named one of the 2008 Top 100 Products by Dentistry Today magazine, was recently praised in a feature on the link between oral sex and oral cancer in the nationally-syndicated show, The Doctors.
