American Consumer Credit Counseling Joins Fight to Find a Cure

As an advocate for finding a cure for type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes, American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC) recognizes the social responsibility associated with this cause. Setting a lead example for all types of organizations, ACCC has donated nearly $3,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In hope of someday eliminating the daily struggle for sufferers of the disease, 3 million in the U.S. alone, ACCC challenges other organizations to join the fight for finding a cure.

Each year over 15,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. That's 40 children per day. Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. While diagnosis most often occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While the causes of this process are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.16 billion to diabetes research, including more than $137 million in FY2007. More than 85 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. In FY2007, the Foundation funded 700 centers, grants and fellowships in 20 countries (JRDF.org).
