As economic turmoil worsens, so will cases of insomnia, depression, rage, addiction and abuse, according to author and physician Dr. Andrea Pennington. Dr. Pennington'ss own practice has been flooded with people suffering from emotional and physical issues as a direct result of financial troubles.
Along with losing their homes, income and sense of security, many are losing their health benefits which Pennington believes will lead to long-term medical problems. She says, as fewer
people can afford basic healthcare and prescription medications, chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes will remain at epidemic levels in this country.
Dr. Pennington believes some may not even be aware that financial stress is to blame for health problems. She offers a five-step approach for beating recession depression and staying
healthy both mentally and physically despite the economic meltdown:
1. Focus on Personal Health. Commit to proper nutrition, exercise and stress relief.
2. Maintain Healthy Supportive Relationships. Spend extra time with family and friends.
3. Take a Personal Health Inventory. Honestly assess your situation.
4. Get Solution-Oriented. Work with available resources to improve your well-being.
5. Find Affordable Ways to Feel Good. Get self-indulgent on a budget.
