C.H.E.F. Hosts First Annual Conference on Eliminating Health Inequities

Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (C.H.E.F.), long known for its mission to promote health and quality of life through education, will host its first annual conference focused on eliminating health inequities on September 27 in Seattle, Washington. C.H.E.F. will bring together its grantees from seven culturally-diverse communities within Washington State to address ways to help those suffering from health inequities to improve nutrition and increase physical activity. C.H.E.F.'s grant advisory committee members, board members, philanthropic staff, as well as select community and foundation partners vested in eliminating health inequities will also be in attendance.

Sponsored by C.H.E.F.'s Philanthropic Division, which offers grants and partnerships to organizations working to eliminate health inequities across ethnic, racial, and economic groups, the conference will feature a distinguished panel of speakers. The keynote presentation will be given by Makani Themba-Nixon, Executive Director of the Praxis Project, a national, nonprofit organization that works to address the underlying, systemic causes of community problems and create healthy, just communities. Other speakers include:

* Huong Nguyen, PhD, RN, University of Washington Health Promotion Research Center

* Aliya Haq, MS, RD, CD, Harborview Medical Center

* Carolyn Cohen, MS, Cohen Research and Evaluation

According to Kathy Burgoyne, PhD, Director of Philanthropy, Research, and Evaluation at C.H.E.F., "We are delighted to host this conference because it allows us to encourage social innovation and build a movement to increase opportunities for people in ethnic, racial, and economic groups to eat healthier and move more. Through a series of workshops focused on environmental approaches to community change, best practices in physical activity and nutrition education, as well as advocacy principles for addressing health inequities , we hope to provide participants with useful informaton that will support their community work."
