Mixing Business With Pleasure

A new program at UNLV offers to introduce students to many of the cutting-edge ideas taught in today's business schools with just four two-day sessions in Las Vegas. Starting on May 20, the Business Essentials: Executive Certificate in Business Administration covers sixteen topics ranging from strategy and finance to ethics and leadership.

"Many street-smart business people have a hard time accessing universities for the high level business education they need to improve their productivity and earning potential," said Dr. Steve Phelan, director of UNLV's Center for Entrepreneurship. "At UNLV, we are committed to unlocking the gates to the ivory tower and making our knowledge available to anyone with a desire to learn more."

Entrance is based on a desire to learn and prior business experience rather than traditional entrance requirements, such as GPAs or GMATs. Completion of the program, in turn, is based on attendance and participation rather than essays and exams. "Students are exposed to new concepts in the classroom and then given the tools to continue their learning when they leave," said Phelan.

The program will be taught by leading professors from the UNLV College of Business, with years of experience making business concepts and skills readily understandable. Sessions are organized into two-day modules focused on people, processes, the environment of business, and money. A new module is offered every month, so students can complete the program in as little as four months or take up to two years.
