Texas Education Agency Chooses Academy of READING to Improve Reading Ability for Students in Grades 48

AutoSkill International (http://www.autoskill.com) announced today that the Academy of READING was selected by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as an approved program for its Intensive Reading Instruction grant. Now Texas school districts that are eligible for the grant can choose the AutoSkill reading intervention solution to realize significant grade-level gains, improve results on high-stakes tests and dramatically improve retention and graduation rates.

The TEA Intensive Reading Initiative grants are designed to fund intensive reading instruction programs for students in grades 4-8 attending schools that have failed to improve reading performance. Schools use the funding to provide struggling students with immediate, targeted instructional programs.

The Academy of READING (http://www.autoskill.com/products/reading/index.php) was chosen for the TEA Commissioner's List of Approved Intensive Reading Programs by a panel of experts who reviewed proposals. The Academy of READING met all of the grant program's criteria. It includes comprehensive research-based instruction, assessment and performance outcome measures, data-driven instructional systems, and professional development in its implementation and use. This year was the first opportunity for new programs to be added to the TEA's list of approved reading intervention programs list since its inception in 2005.

Texas schools are already seeing the benefits of using the Academy of READING. In 2007, Spring Independent School District (ISD) in suburban Houston piloted the intervention solution in three schools. In the course of a semester, students at one school saw an average gain of two levels in Lexile reading scores, and their results on the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System jumped by nearly 30 percent - the highest increase in the district. As a result of this pilot, Spring ISD decided to use the Academy of READING in all of its elementary and middle schools during the 2007-2008 school year.

"Exemplary Texas school districts, such as Spring ISD, are already seeing how the Academy of READING can help close the achievement gap for their students," said KC Lim, CEO, AutoSkill International. "Now as part of the Commissioner's List of Approved Intensive Reading Program providers, we will be able to partner with even more Texas school districts as state educators continue to strive toward their goal of having all students achieve at grade level."
