Aladdin Academy Cosmetology Student Wins 1st Place and 2nd Place in...

Vickie Granberry, a cosmetology student at Aladdin Academy, 1026 NW 38th St. in Lawton, OK packed a one-two punch by winning first in the Fantasy Mannequin and second place in the Bridal Mannequin contest at the recent Express Yourself Educational Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Lawton student competed against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma, including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College.

There were three categories: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event. In the competition that Granberry won, students were told to pull out the stops and create an innovative "fantasy" design for both hair and makeup. In the Bridal category where Granberry took second place, students were instructed to create a beautiful and fashionable bridal up-do with a "total look" theme that included make-up decorations, ornamentation and clothing. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.

"Vickie has a real passion for cosmetology and it really shows in her work," said Mona Duckworth, director of the Aladdin Academy. "Her complementary use of lines and colors not only created a dazzling effect, it was an accurate reflection of the vision she wanted to create. In addition to her dedication and talent, Vickie is a wonderful and very self-motivated, young woman with extremely high standards. We expect she will go far in her career after she graduates in April."

The 1500-hour cosmetology curriculum consists of: Theory of Cosmetology and Oklahoma Law, Haircutting; Shampooing; Hair Coloring; Hair Styling; Chemical Hair Restructuring; Lightening; Facials and Makeup; Massage; Nail Technology; Treatment of the Hair and Scalp; Electricity and Light Therapy; Creative Preference; Disinfection Procedures; as well as lectures and demonstrators on the uses of new products and tools of the trade. Graduates are eligible to apply for a license through the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology.

The instructor course consists of a 1000-hour program that trains the student in the basic teaching skills, educational judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to pass the State Board examination and for competency in job entry level employment as an instructor or related career avenue.
