Boston, MA December 30, 2008 -- Boston University'ss Metropolitan College has announced the January 17 launch of its new Certificate in Genealogical Research (http://professional.bu.edu/cpe/Genealogy.asp), offered by the University'ss Center for Professional Education.

The question of ancestry can have high stakes in the library science, legal, and historical fields--to name a few. When genealogical and ancestral research is relied upon to solve medical mysteries, trace property ownership, locate adopted children, find lost friends, or write historical discourses, the results--and how they were obtained--must be irrefutable.

Take the issue of Misha Defonseca, whose bestselling 1997 autobiography, Misha: A M's233;moire of the Holocaust Years, described her extraordinary experiences as a Jewish hidden child--including claims that she was sheltered by wolves. When suspicions were raised about the tale'ss veracity, genealogist Sharon Sargeant was asked to investigate. By applying the research techniques of the Genealogical Proof Standard's174;, Sargeant uncovered indisputable biographical evidence proving that Defonseca'ss elaborate story was a hoax.

In January 2009, Sargeant will bring her expertise to Boston University'ss ancestral research and genealogy certificate program (http://professional.bu.edu/cpe/CPEscedesc.aspCID=15399's38;PID=1167's38;dept=CPE), joining a faculty comprising some of the nation'ss premier genealogists--including three of only 50 lifelong fellows of the American Society of Genealogists. Collectively, the faculty boasts more than seven decades of international forensic genealogical experience, and represents countless millions of dollars returned to rightful heirs.

Designed by author, editor, and genealogist Melinde Lutz Sanborn, FASG, and reviewed by best-selling author and educator Elizabeth Shown Mills, FASG, the Certificate in Genealogical Research will build on the principles of the Genealogical Proof Standard's174;. By providing hands-on training in basic genealogical principles and techniques--such as how to identify and evaluate evidence, design research strategies, and write quality reports--the curriculum will help students develop the knowledge and skills essential to conducting quality genealogical assignments. Successful completion of the program leads to a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University, and imparts the skills necessary to prepare a portfolio for the Board for Certification of Genealogists.
