Forget about taking the cake, a wedding cake topper-inspired theme of a bride and groom captured second place for three cosmetology students from the International Academy of Hair Design, 3350 N. Arizona Ave. in Chandler at the recent Express Yourself Educational Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Arizona students competed against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma,
including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College.
The three-person team of Richard Erwin; Aimee Pitman; Jessica Brown and their model Matthew Rada, was a huge hit and resulted in a second place prize for their project, wedding cake
topper. Erwin, Pitman and Brown transformed their model into a half man/half woman wedding topper that used hair extensions to create a top hat on the model's "groom side" and an updo for
a bride on the female half. The team created facial hair and a tuxedo for the groom's half of the wedding topper; his better half (or bride's half) displayed makeup, accessories and
bridal clothing.
The Fantasy Mannequin competition encouraged students to pull out the stops on their creativity to create a fantasy youthful "extreme" up-do demonstrating at least two colors (which was
done prior to the competition) and also incorporate ornamentation, decoration and make-up. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
Carmen Cisneros, Amber Evans, Isela Hernandez and Maria Kintel from IAHD in Chandler participated in the mannequin competition. Cisneros, Hernandez and Kintel won honorable mention for
their fantasy mannequins and Evans captured an honorable mention award for her bridal mannequin.
In addition to the competitions, the educational forum included demonstrations from Master Cuts, Madrid of Madrid's International and the Peter Hntz Design Team.
Cosmetology students from both the Chandler school as well as the International Academy of Hair Design, College of Hair & Aesthetics, 4812 S. Mill Ave. in Tempe held a variety of
fundraising events to help defray the cost for transportation and hotel accommodations during the trip. The students participated in car washes, haircut-a-thons, conducted raffles and
even held a hair and fashion show to raise funds for the event.
"You have to pardon the pun, but the wedding cake topper really took the cake," said Jessica Wolman, one of the three owners of the cosmetology school. "Each half of the model was
exquisitely done. The bride looked like a beautiful bride and the groom side was truly a handsome man. In addition to the creativity and quality of the finished product, I was very
impressed with how Richard, Aimee and Jessica were able to work as a team. We are proud of everyone who participated, as well as those who helped support this exciting event."
