Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship Awarded

In memory of a loving wife, mother, and grandmother; and an exceptional teacher, the Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship was organized and three scholarships were awarded, for the first time, on Monday.

Many in the small Beaver, Utah community remember Laurel as the perfect first-grade teacher. She enjoyed helping little minds learn to read and discover a love of learning. Laurel shared her exuberance for life and knowledge outside of the classroom too. Her children were gently prodded to always better themselves. Her friends remember her charisma fondly. And her co-workers still regard her as a model teacher.

Always the optimist, Laurel confronted her challenges and fought to the end. Some of her accomplishments include; attending, paying for, and graduating from Brigham Young University (she was the first in her family to do so); returning to school (as a mother of four) to renew her teaching certification; and valiantly fighting her four-year battle with cancer.

To honor Laurel'ss example and to help further her drive for education, Laurel'ss family John O. Christiansen, Richard J. Christiansen, Brett D. Christiansen, Von J. Christiansen, and Daryl T. Christiansen and their families, awarded scholarships to three graduating Beaver High School female students who exhibit many of Laurel'ss characteristics and yearning for knowledge.

Courtney Rogers, Beaver High Class of 2007, was awarded a $2000 Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship.

Courtney currently works in a sixth-grade classroom at Belknap Elementary where she is both learning and teaching. Her goals include helping others achieve their own happiness. She is well on her way and is regarded as a gentle, loving example to those with whom she associates. Courtney is an intelligent, respectful young woman who will do well as she pursues her education at Southern Utah University.

Shannon Joseph, Beaver High Class of 2007, was awarded a $750 Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship.

Shannon lists Mrs. Christiansen, her first-grade teacher, as one of her role models -- and aptly so. Her education goals include earning a Teaching Degree in Elementary Education, and then a Masters Degree in Speech Pathology.

Shannon is well prepared to achieve her education goals at Utah State University. She'ss a good student and excellent musician. She currently works as a first-grade aide at Belknap Elementary. And she is a fun, dynamic, and dedicated person.

Whitnie Whitbeck, Beaver High Class of 2007, was awarded a $250 Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship.

Attending college and earning a degree has been a long-term goal for Whitnie. Now as she heads to Southern Utah University, she plans to earn a Teaching Degree in Secondary Education.

Whitnie is an intelligent, motivated young woman with a strong work ethic and determination to achieve her goals.

To all the Laurel Christiansen Memorial Scholarship applicants and winners, good luck in the achieving your education goals.
