Scholarships to Give UK students an Opportunity to Study in Australasia

Study Options, the leading representative of Australasian institutions in the UK announces seven leading Australian and New Zealand universities are offering a series of one-off, unique scholarships to UK students for undergraduate programmes beginning in February 2006.

Chris Madden, pro-Vice Chancellor of Griffith University in Queensland states "Tuition fees are the biggest change British universities have had in years. Before they were importers, but now with the tuition fees and given the exchange rates, the cost of studying here is not much more than staying at home."

Taken together, the scholarships represent a considerable amount of money - around 100,000.

The universities are hoping to attract high-achieving UK students and each scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit (with the exception of James Cook University - please see the details below). The scheme will be run through the universities' UK representative, Study Options.

How the scheme will work

The students must apply for a place to study at the university and for the scholarship at the same time. They therefore need to have carefully researched which course they want to do on the university's own website and on the Study Options website, www.studyoptions.com before making their application. If at any point during that research they have questions or require further information on any aspect of university study in New Zealand or Australia, they can contact Study Options. We offer free advice and guidance for students in the UK and Ireland. For more about who we are and what we do please visit our website.

Once the student has selected a course and a university, they should contact Study Options (telephone 08456 581166 or email info @ studyoptions.com) for an academic application form and a scholarship application form. The two completed forms and any supporting documents required should then be sent to Study Options by Friday 28 October, 2005.

Notes and conditions of entry

The scholarships will take the form of fee waivers and will be implemented once the successful student has paid any remaining balance of their tuition fees and been issued with a Confirmation of Enrolment.

All additional/other costs (including but not restricted to) accommodation and living expenses, student service charge, health cover, travel expenses, transportation, etc) must be met by the student. Please see note 3, below.

Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must submit a full academic application to study and a scholarship application to Study Options simultaneously.

The university and the university alone is responsible for selecting who receives their scholarship.

All applications must be submitted via Study Options. Any applications sent directly to the university will be disregarded.

Students must be 18 or over to apply.

Students must hold British A-Levels to apply.

Students must be British citizens to apply.

Students can only apply for a maximum of two of the scholarships detailed above.

Notes to editors:

1. February is the beginning of the academic year for southern hemisphere universities.

2. Annual undergraduate tuition fees in Australia are usually between AU$10,000 and AU$13,000 a year (approx 4,100 - 5,400). In New Zealand, annual undergraduate tuition fees are usually between NZ$13,000 and NZ$20,000 (approx 5,000 to 7,650)

3. UK banks do not currently give student loans for international study, and international students are not eligible to apply for a student loan in Australia or New Zealand. According to the Australian government, an international student will spend an average of A$230 (95) a week on living costs, taking into account accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, travel and so on. Education New Zealand recommends tertiary students budget for up to NZ$20,000 (approx 7,500) per year for living expenses. As full time degree students they will, however, be eligible to apply to work on their student visas, up to a maximum of 20 hours a week.
