With the recent emphasis and national attention given to science education in America, one New York state company is developing techniques to extend training to teachers as well as
students. Science Kit has teamed with Ten80, a professional development group, to offer MindBugs workshops and course programs designed to prepare teachers to show demonstrated competency
in science and math.
The fanciful title of the workshops is named after the bugs one may find infecting a computer. MindBugs are defined as concepts that are correct only in limited situations but are
incorrectly applied in others. Students and educators often hold critical misconceptions about the nature of scientific concepts or skills. These Mindbugs, like a computer virus, can
spread through a student'ss system, affecting future lessons and learning. For example, students frequently think that mass is the most important factor determining whether an object
sinks or floats. However, if students do not understand the importance of density, they cannot understand plate tectonics or weather in earth science. The researched-based MindBugs
training sessions offer strategies and tools to prevent and overcome the common misperceptions, hidden within typical core curriculums.
Science Kit now offers these MindBugs seminars in a variety of formats, so schools and teachers can choose a convenient method of training for their staff. Engineer-Educators from Ten80
Education will visit school sites to conduct one, two or three day workshops for a hands-on training. There are also CD courses and online courses available, so teachers can work at their
own pace through the MindBugs programs. Training is offered for both science and math curriculums, offering teachers effective methods of integrating conceptual teaching techniques and
helping students avoid stumbling blocks in classroom learning.
Science Kit offers innovative products with practical implementation in the classroom and laboratory. Founded in 1956 by science teachers, Gustave and Jane Koch, Science Kit is a leading
provider of educational tools and resources that maximize teaching effectiveness.
Science Kit is located at 777 East Park Drive in Tonawanda, New York. For any questions, interviews, or media requests, please contact Mike Deniz at 585-321-9414 or mdeniz @
