June 16, 2005 -- Nowadays much has been talked about e Learning and Learn by Doing etc which are in a way simulated versions of the work integrated learning approach of lead universities
such as BITS, Pilani. The growth of the IT industry has put a challenging demand in the educational system to provide appropriate Human Resources for the IT industry. This calls for
radically different approaches to the Teaching Learning Process especially in view of shortages of Human Resources for the Teaching Profession itself and e Learning concept in a way
addresses this problem of educational institutions. This is where the Industry and University together can play a vital role.
Who dares to Teach must never cease to Learn and the work integrated learning ensures this. e Learning is more than a cost saver. Those who do it well say that it allows them to engage
students more effectively than traditional classroom training and education and that is where the payoff is.
Every truth has Mmany corners and the conventional teaching gives ONE and expects the student to find the rest. The e Learning approach can show several corners if not all. Education is
not how much you have learnt but being able to differentiate between what you know and what you do not know. e Learning methodology should not ignore this aspect as a byte of wisdom is
worth more than megabytes of knowledge.
Good Teacher must also be a good story teller and multi media technologies offer best story telling. Good Teachers are costly and one may say e Teaching and Learning is a costly affair
but one must remember that bad teachers and students cost more for the society.
To sum up: Mediocre Teacher Tells; Good Teacher Explains; Very Good Teacher Demonstrates; Excellent Teacher Inspires and e Teacher can
do all of above and remain Outstanding.
