Eva's Village (http://www.evasvillage.org) is a Paterson based comprehensive, social service agency with a mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide medical care to the poor with respect for the human dignity of each individual. Started in 1982 as a simple soup kitchen, Eva's Village is now one of the most respected anti-poverty programs (http://www.evasvillage.org/shelter.html) in NJ, with over eleven programs including shelters for men, women and mothers and children. With the addition of affordable apartments Eva's will be able to provide a true continuum of care, from homelessness to independence.
Eva's was awarded $1.8 million in tax credits and other housing funds by the state to provide permanent affordable housing to the needy. The apartments will include efficiencies and one, two and three bedroom units. Paterson residents who meet income levels would be eligible to apply. Preliminary estimates peg the costs at approximately $14-million. Federal, state, and city rental vouchers will assist low-income individuals and families in obtaining housing. Construction will begin as early as 2009.
"As a comprehensive anti-poverty program we are truly excited and pleased to be able to bring the mission of Eva's Village full circle. We are blessed to be able to provide affordable housing to residents of Paterson that is safe and beautiful. Eva's Village Apartments will be a place where people can live with the dignity and respect they deserve," commented Sister Gloria Perez, executive director.
