For Canadian employers, being recognized as an 'Employer of Choice' has never been more important. Low unemployment rates and shifting demographics mean the next generation of employees are looking for companies that are dedicated to assisting them with their professional development needs while providing them with the tools they need to maximize their potential.
The AIR MILES Reward Program, Canada's premiere coalition loyalty program is committed to development at every level. In fact, AIR MILES was recognized, together with Canadian Management
Centre, with the Gold Canadian Award for Training Excellence from the Canadian Society for Training and Development for an innovative managers' training program at an awards ceremony
Monday night.
"With the recent growth and diversity of AIR MILES' business, it has become important to focus on enhancing our effective leadership capabilities for new and current managers," says Gord
MacDonald, vice president of human resources, AIR MILES Reward Program. "The Make It Happen: Leadership Fundamentals program provides us with a valuable tool for improving employee
retention and engagement, as well as growing talent within the organization. It has helped prepare managers for success and provided them with a strong understanding of what's expected of
them in their role."
The award-winning program was developed by Canadian Management Centre to equip managers at AIR MILES with the knowledge and necessary skills to communicate effectively, lead by example,
coach with direction, and foster the growth and development of teams.
"Canadian Management Centre worked closely with AIR MILES to design and implement a foundational manager training program that maintained an approach consistent with the company's brand
image and culture," says Bruce Peer, president, Canadian Management Centre. "The program was designed to increase managerial effectiveness while also delivering measurable impact and
sustainable change in behaviour and performance."
The Make It Happen: Leadership Fundamentals program is successful because it inspires engagement from both the participants and the senior management team to support the learning in the
organization and achieve the desired results. To ensure managers are motivated to apply what they learn back on the job, they are involved in a continuous learning process rather than a
single training 'event.' The program includes a variety of approaches, such as active instructor-led sessions, opportunities for self-study, and introspection.
The Make It Happen: Leadership Fundamentals program ranked high in all categories of the judging criteria for the CSTD Canadian Awards for Training Excellence and won on the following
merits:
Originality -- the program demonstrated ingenuity and creativity in the design to meet the needs of the managers
Instructional Design -- a comprehensive program was developed that respected adult learning principles and included learner support throughout the series with encouragement to implement
their learning
Evaluation Strategy -- Kirkpatrick's method of evaluation was built into the program and was carried out effectively with Kirkpatrick's involvement
Packaging -- the materials were very professionally presented and were visually appealing to the learner demographic
Communication Style -- the program used straightforward business communication that was relevant to the managers
The Canadian Society for Training and Development, Canada's largest national association for workplace learning and performance practitioners, developed the Canadian Award for Training
Excellence to recognize exemplary Canadian workplace learning and performance programs.
