It's been referred to as "the strategy that never sleeps" and has been hailed as one of the most effective methods people can use to advance their careers or business. Online networking--the process of using Web-based tools to build relationships for the purpose of sharing knowledge, ideas, leads, contacts, and support--is revolutionizing the way people achieve professional success.
Take it from Ellen Sautter and Diane Crompton, Right Management's "gurus" of online networking and authors of the recently-released book Seven Days to Online Networking. "Online
networking is a tool that works for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whether you're awake or asleep, whether you're making an effort or not. In a very short amount of time--even a
week--you can dramatically enlarge the scope, depth and quality of your network in ways that traditional networking would take months, if not years, to achieve," they say.
In their book, Sautter and Crompton teach readers how to enhance their online identity to better stand out in the job search and establish themselves as authorities in their field or
industry. They also make the following predictions about the role online networking will play in upcoming years.
- More sophisticated technologies are yielding increased development options, site and software features, and networking benefits.
- The number of blogs continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.
- More social networking Web sites are starting every day, many catering to niche markets, including the baby boomer and "gray" demographics.
- Social networking sites will increasingly partner with other companies that offer technology to complement their own offerings. These partnerships are called "mashups" and should lead
to enhanced user benefits.
- The number of people on social networking sites is growing by the millions every month, with the major sites still getting most of the traffic.
- More senior-level managers are becoming involved with online networking as a way to demonstrate thought leadership, showcase experience, and market themselves.
- More recruiters and companies are using search engines to find and qualify candidates. All professionals therefore need to have a significant and positive Internet presence or risk
being screened out or viewed as not up-to-date on technology.
- More businesses are starting blogs to communicate with employees, customers and shareholders.
- Major corporations are looking for social networking acquisitions and vying for position. Google owns Orkut, Rupert Murdoch bought MySpace and at the time of the book's release was
talking with LinkedIn.
Sautter and Crompton acknowledge that predicting the future of online networking is difficult because the landscape is changing so rapidly, but add, "The one certainty is that online
networking technologies will be an important part of any career management or business development effort for a long time to come."
