1st AddressBased Climate Reporting Service Enhances Reports with Fault Mapping for Western Clients

The nation's8217;s first online, address-based climate and environmental-risk-reporting service has added address-based fault mapping for western property owners.

's8220;We are very excited to be able to enhance our reports with fault mapping for our western clients. Now, not only can you get information on how close you live to a fault and when it last quaked, but you can see all faults visually around your address for 50 miles,'s8221; said David H. Purcell, founder and chief executive officer, Climate Appraisal Services, LLC.

Launched in November 2006, Climate Appraisal Services, LLC (www.ClimateAppraisal.com) is the only single source that connects consumers with comprehensive address-based information on the possible impacts of climate change, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, drought, floods, industrial pollution and disease. Leading researchers at The University of Arizona in Tucson have been advising Climate Appraisal Services on how best to provide such information.

's8220;At Climate Appraisal, we believe that everyone should know their seismic risk level if they live in or near earthquake country, and know where they live in relation to the nearest major faults. In the event you are moving to earthquake country, you should know how close you are buying to a major fault; and if there is a major earthquake, this fault information could be critical in its aftermath in determining potential safe exit routes for those most impacted,'s8221; Purcell said.

For example, the 10 most costly U.S. earthquakes since 1900 all occurred in western states, with 9 of those since 1950 according to the Insurance Information Institute's8217;s November 2006 report. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) calculates that there is a 's8220;62% probability for one or more magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquakes from 2003 to 2032's8221; in the San Francisco Bay region. The USGS gives 86% odds of those earthquakes occurring on one of 8 faults: the San Gregorio fault, San Andreas fault, Rodgers Creek fault, Hayward fault, Calaveras fault, Concord-Green Valley fault, Mt. Diablo Thrust fault, and the Greenville fault.     With Climate Appraisal's8217;s new address-based fault map, a western homeowner can see exactly where they live in relation to these faults in a 50-mile radius, or if they may be moving close to one of these faults.

's8220;Major earthquake risk is of course a known and accepted fact to most Californians, as well as those living in western states; but that doesn's8217;t mean you shouldn's8217;t know where you live in relation to that risk, which is greater the closer you live to a major fault. Scientists project that there is a high probability of a major earthquake in the San Francisco Bay region in the next two or three decades, and those living or moving close to a major fault should know their risk and be prepared for a potential major earthquake,'s8221; said Susan Beck, PhD, Professor of Geosciences at The University of Arizona, one of the scientists who is advising Climate Appraisal Services. Dr. Beck is a specialist in seismology, and she maintains an active research program in earthquake seismology, focusing on issues related to understanding global earthquakes, mountain building, and active tectonics in the U.S. and around the world.

In addition to Dr. Beck, The University of Arizona researchers who are advising Climate Appraisal Services are Jonathan Overpeck, PhD, a Professor of Geosciences and of Atmospheric Sciences at The University of Arizona in Tucson, whose specialties include climate dynamics, climate-vegetation interactions, and environmental decision-support, and Andrew C. Comrie, PhD, a UA Professor of Geography and of Atmospheric Sciences whose specialties include climatology, climate and health, and air quality science.

Climate Appraisal Services combines both historical and state-of-the-art forecasting science to deliver a comprehensive address-based climate appraisal for $30. More than half of Climate Appraisal net profits will be reinvested in climate and environmental science research and development.

About Climate Appraisal Services, LLC
Easton, Connecticut-based Climate Appraisal Services, LLC is the only address-based comprehensive online source that provides information on natural and man-made climate change events using historical data and state-of-the-art climate-modeling forecasting. A full appraisal report projects potential changes to a location's8217;s environment in the areas of global warming and other natural and man-made phenomena such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, droughts, wildfires, floods, industrial pollution and disease.
