Giroud Tree Service Celebrates Arbor Day with Gifts of Tree Care to Bucks County Audubon Society and Hope Lodge

In recognition of Arbor Day, Lou Giroud Tree Service has donated thousands of dollars in tree work to two area nonprofit organizations. Arbor Day, a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care, was founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872. In Pennsylvania, the holiday falls on the last Friday in April (April 25 this year).

On April 14, Giroud worked to save a majestic Ash tree that has shaded the barn at the Bucks County Audubon Society for more 80 years. "A thorough inspection of the tree from its crown down to the roots uncovered a myriad of problems," says Mike Chenail, a Giroud ISA Certified Arborist. "Compacted soil, girdling roots, heavy deadwood and weak main limbs were just a few of the reasons for the tree's decline." Giroud removed the deadwood; installed cables to shore up weak limbs; and strengthened the root system by removing the girdling roots, excavating the compacted soil, and adding organic soil to the roots.

On April 23, Giroud Tree Service will provide a team of employees to work alongside crews from other businesses at historic Hope Lodge, which is located in Fort Washington, Montgomery County. All the firms donating their work crews are members of the Pennsylvania-Delaware Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

In addition to supplying a crew for the day, Giroud's Mike Chenail is also responsible for organizing the event. According to Chenail, the goal of the ISA's "Day of Service" is to accomplish as much as possible to address the safety and health issues of the trees at Hope Lodge. "Like many nonprofits, Hope Lodge has tree needs that far outweigh its tree budget," he said. "The Arborists will accomplish tasks such as maintenance pruning of healthy trees and removing deteriorated, hazardous trees and unsightly stumps. If not for the generosity of Giroud and other Chapter members, this work would go undone."

Giroud donated its services to the Bucks County Audubon Society and Hope Lodge through the "Giroud Treework for Charity" program, which contributes tree care services to parks, historical sites and other nonprofit organizations located in Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. The program was established in 1997 to help local nonprofit organizations preserve their irreplaceable trees. It has already provided free tree care to more than 15 area organizations.

Giroud welcomes applications from any 501(c)3 organization located within Giroud's service area that is open to the entire community on a nonsectarian basis. For more information, call Giroud Tree Service at 215-682-7704.

Hope Lodge in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, is a historic house museum administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Friends of Hope Lodge and Mather Mill. Built between 1743 and 1748, the mansion is one of the best examples of Georgian style architecture in the state. During the six-week-long 1777 Whitemarsh Encampment, the Continental Army occupied the surrounding fields and front lawn of Hope Lodge.
