You are invited to join the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club on October 27th, from 6pm-9pm for their first Blues and Cruise fundraising party on the shoreline of the Gowanus Canal in
Brooklyn.
The organization offers free tours of the estuary throughout the summer and is celebrating the end of their sixth season with this party to help facilitate construction of a new
boathouse. Lights will be attached to life jackets for after-sunset self-exploration of the Gowanus Canal and the event is open to all ages.
Once known for rank odors and industrial waste, the Gowanus Canal waterway has experienced an incredible rebirth and is now home to a variety of wildlife. By canoing this waterway, the
Dredgers have changed the perception of the shoreline neighborhood and have attracted the attention of politicians to procure Federal funding that will assist New York's efforts to
restore our harbor.
This party will be your chance to contribute to this organization and experience the neighborhood after dark just in time for Halloween inspiration. It is rumored that the ghosts of
revolutionary war soldiers haunt the area at night and are often spotted in the eerie glow under the many bridges that cross the canal.
Concept sketches of visions for a future boathouse, developed by Architecture for Humanity NY will be displayed against the industrial buildings and live music from Hank Plank and the 2
by 4 s will get the party dancing.
The festival includes an all you can eat BBQ from Schnack, and a visit from Billy Bones (for the kids) from 6:30 to 7:30pm! Wear casual clothing and river shoes and participate in a
silent auction with wonderful prizes from area restaurants, merchants and original artwork from local artists.
Reserve in advance for $25 through the Gowanus Dredgers website: www.gowanuscanal.org or purchase tickets at the door for $40 (kids under 12 are admitted free). The block party event will
be held at 162 Second Street, off Bond Street, just blocks from the Carroll Street F/G subway station and will run rain or shine but on-water activity may be postponed due to weather.
