Gowanus Oktoberfest Festival

On Saturday, October 22, from 11am to 5pm, the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club will host the fourth annual Oktoberfest festival on the Gowanus Canal, launching from the end of 2nd Street, off Bond Street.

This season's festival includes Marine Ecology Tours with the Urban Divers who have been documenting the wildlife along the waterway and an opportunity to board and meet the crew of the Empty Vessel Project, a World War II Navy Rescue boat undergoing salvage and repair to eventually become an Action, Art and Design Center fostering projects focused on sustainable living in post-industrial urban landscapes.

At 10am, departing from Smith and 9th Streets, you are invited to join Captain Ellie and Shorewalks for a stroll through the Gowanus neighborhood, crossing all four bridges and narrating the 400 years of neighborhood history.

Free self-guided canoe tours will be offered throughout the day or bring your boat (or something that floats) for the 4pm Race Whut Ye Brung Gowanus Regatta with first-place awards for each vessel category. The Urban Divers will launch their fleet of skiffs for this race and canal exploration throughout the day.

The Empty Vessel project, located at Carroll Street, will distribute fantastic-historic maps of the Gowanus, serve their trademarked "Gowanus Blend" coffee and run films after sunset. The Gowanus Dredgers will be serving Baykeeper Oyster Stew with other refreshments and will showcase their oyster demonstration project and you ll learn why they don t flush when it s raining.

In addition, The Gowanus Artists will be hosting the 9th Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour featuring over 115 visual artists displaying their works in the place where they were created. This is an opportunity to enter old manufacturing buildings of the Gowanus neighborhood and meet the wonderful talent that is creating one of the City s most vibrant creative communities.
