In October and November, area residents will wade into metro rivers, lakes and streams as part of the continuing statewide campaign to clean and preserve over 70,000 miles of Georgia's
rivers and streams. The effort will be part of Rivers Alive, a joint program of DNR's Environmental Protection Division and Keep Georgia Beautiful, the Fourteenth Annual Georgia Waterway
Cleanup is expected to once again be the largest single volunteer effort to beautify Georgia's water resources.
Local volunteers will be joining an estimated 28,000 other volunteers statewide participating in the Annual River Cleanup. During the month of October over 170 other cleanups will collect
trash and other debris in streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands from the Coosa River in North Georgia to the Okefenokee Swamp in the South. That is why this year's event is called, "Clean
Water From the Mountains to the Sea."
During the 2004 River Cleanup, more than 22,000 volunteers cleaned over 1,250 miles of waterways and removed over 590,317 pounds of trash and garbage including tires, children bikes, a
safe and telephone booth from the State's waterways, according to Mitch Russell, Coordinator of Rivers Alive expects this year's River Cleanup to involve hundreds more volunteers and to
continue to be the State's largest volunteer effort to beautify Georgia's water resources. In 2004, Georgia participated in the International Coastal Cleanup and had the second largest
clean up in the country based on the number of volunteers. The State had the largest cleanup based on amount of trash removed per volunteer.
