Chiang Mai Celebrates Loy Krathong Festival in November

November in Northern Thailand brings the change from rainy season to cold season. With that change coincides the annual Loy Krathong Festival. This year Chiang Mai will celebrate Loy Krathong from November 15 to 17 in a three-day long event on the Ping river. ExporThai.com is commemorating the festival by offering special Loy Krathong products for wholesale sale worldwide.

Chiang Mai, in the mountains of Northern Thailand, has three seasons 8211; hot, rainy, and cold. According to tradition, 600 years ago a princess of the Sukothai Kingdom in Central Thailand fashioned small floating offerings of banana tree and flowers in order to thank the rains and the river for their life-giving waters at the end of the rainy season.

Soon after, the new festival was adopted in the Lanna Kingdom where Chiang Mai is found. Celebrated on the first full moon of the second lunar month, in the North the festival is usually called Yee Ping (Second Full Moon).

This year, Chiang Mai will host the three-day long festival beginning November 15. The festival includes dragon boat races, beauty contests, lanterns, candles, and parades of traditional costumes.

Parades take place in front of the Chiang Mai municipal offices on the Ping River on all three nights. Dragon boat races are on November 15.

Krathong means "offering" and "Loy" means float. On November 15 and 16, the banks of the Ping river will be illuminated by the offerings of thousands of residents and visitors as they set them afloat to give their thanks and good wishes to the river.

In rural areas, homes will be decorated with hundreds of "Loy Krathong" candles. Small flat candles in terra cotta dishes are placed in rows of hundreds or thousands. Combined with the light of the full moon, the site is unforgettable.

For Thailand-lovers who are unable to come to Chiang Mai, Thailand's premiere on-line wholesaler, ExporThai.com offers traditional Loy Krathong products for sale.

"ExporThai.com makes truly traditional Thai products available around the world," says Somsak Bauood, founder of ExporThai.com. "Usually what you see offered for sale on the internet is made for tourists and foreigners. We offer genuine Thai products, like Loy Krathong candles. And, we have them all year long."

ExporThai.com has been a 100% on-line wholesaler of Thai handicrafts, Thai silk, and Thai traditional products since 1999. Since its founding, ExporThai's catalog has grown to over 700 items made using traditional methods and materials.

"Festivals like Loy Krathong offer our customers a way to understand the real spirit of Thailand. These festivals weren't invented for tourists. If the tourists didn't come, we'd still have them!", exclaims Bauood. "I'm proud that ExporThai.com can bring our Thai culture to the world via the internet so everyone can enjoy."
