The Keystone Center has selected four individuals to be honored with the organization'ss annual Leadership Awards. The awards will be presented at The Keystone Center'ss 14th Annual
Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., June 7.
This year's8217;s honorees have been selected for their leadership, outstanding problem-solving skills and efforts to seek consensus-based solutions to some of the most challenging issues
facing society, said The Keystone Center President Peter Adler, Ph.D. Each has demonstrated a sense of vision and a capacity to bring about change, have been recognized for their efforts
by their peers and other national and international leaders, and have contributed to society in ways that reflect the spirit and mission of The Keystone Center.
The 2007 Leadership Awards and recipients include:
> Leadership in the Environment Award, Peter A. Seligmann, Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO, Conservation International; presented by Congressman Tom Udall.
Peter Seligmann has led CI from its days as a small group with lofty ideals to an international organization achieving ambitious, strategic goals across more than 40 countries on four
continents. Over nearly two decades, Seligmann has overseen CI'ss development into both an intellectual leader and a catalyst for significant conservation delivery. CI continues to be
committed to finding lasting solutions to conservation issues and believes that all sectors of society must understand the costs of environmental loss and be engaged in finding
solutions.
> Leadership in Education Award, Carlo Parravano, Executive Director, Merck Institute for Science Education; presented by Hubert Dyasi, City College of New York. Dr. Parravano has
provided leadership on committees for the National Research Council and National Science Resource Council. In addition he recently chaired the board of directors for the Biological
Sciences Curriculum Study and headed a team to reform science education in Thailand's8212;a Merck supporting response to the tsunami of December 2005. Dr. Parravano is responsible for the
planning, development and implementation of numerous initiatives to improve science education in several states.
> Leadership in Industry Award, John Hofmeister, President, Shell Oil Company; presented by Senator Mary Landrieu.
John Hofmeister is President, Shell Oil Company, a U.S. subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, a global group of energy and petrochemical companies operating in more than 140 countries and
territories. Shell under the leadership of Mr. Hofmeister will be recognized for the following: the re-opening and reinvestment in Shell's8217;s New Orleans headquarters following
hurricane Katrina, as well as their sponsoring the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival so that the event could continue 's8211; an event which is vital to the city's8217;s economy. Mr.
Hofmeister has also supported a national approach to greenhouse gases, We have to deal with greenhouse gases, he said in a speech at the National Press Club. From Shell'ss point of view,
the debate is over. When 98 percent of scientists agree, who is Shell to say, 'sLet'ss debate the science'sHofmeister and other top energy company leaders back a proposal that would cap
greenhouse gas emissions and allow firms to trade their quotas. We cannot deal with 50 different policies, said Shell'ss Hofmeister. We need a national approach to greenhouse gases.
> Leadership in Government Award, Senator Olympia Snowe; presented by Senator Ron Wyden. Focusing her attention on efforts to build bipartisan consensus on key issues that matter to
Maine and America, Snowe has built a reputation as one of the Congress's8217; leading moderates. In 1999, she was cited by Congressional Quarterly for her centrist leadership, and is
co-chair with Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut) of the Senate Centrist Coalition, a forum for communication and cooperation between Senate Democrats and Republicans.Senator Snowe has
worked extensively on a number of issues, including budget and fiscal responsibility; education, including student financial aid and education technology; national security; women's8217;s
issues; health care, including prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients; welfare reform; oceans and fisheries issues; and campaign finance reform.
The awards dinner, emceed by NPR'ss Cokie Roberts, is The Keystone Center'ss largest annual fundraising event. The 2007 event is expected to raise nearly $400,000 for the
organization..
