Toastmasters Schedule Annual Division B Speech Contest



Some of the best speakers in the Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax, Virginia area will compete on Saturday, October 22, when 6 areas, 26 local Toastmasters clubs, get together and conduct their annual Division B Tall Tales and Table Topics Contests.



The event is open to the public and other Toastmaster members. The location is: United Church Annandale, 7100 Columbia Pike, Annandale, Virginia 22003, at 11:00 a.m. Two winners will be chosen from among the eight contestants and will move up to the District level on November 5.



Participating in the contest will be Table Topics winners, Daryl Roberson, Bennie Bough Club (Area 26); Hans Davies, SAIC (Area 21); John Baker, B.L.T. (Area 22); Dianne Strickland, 7 Corners (Area 23).



Tall Tales winners, Christopher Hemrick, Ballston Club (Area 22) David Mosher, Booz Allen Hamilton (Area 21); Ismael Dieppa, NOVA Club (Area 26); Karen Lucas, Lucky Toastmasters (Area 23).



Winners of both Table Topics and Tall Tales are: Kevin Gormley, Toast of Tysons (Area 25); Chris Fillio, Challengers (Area 24).



Within the past 30 days, these speakers advanced from winning their clubs, to winning their area speech contest.



Tall Tales is a three- to five-minute speech that requires contestants to explode on a fish story. The stories are to be highly exaggerated, of an improbable nature, and be within a theme or plot.



Table Topics is a 1-2 minutes off-the-cuff speech in response to an surprise question chosen and presented by the Contest Master.



The 26 Northern Virginia clubs are among more than 8,800 Toastmasters clubs around the world participating in area speech contests this month.



The finalists from this competition will culminate in the District 27 Fall Conference on Saturday, November 5, at the Holiday Inn Capital, 6th & C Streets, SW, Washington, DC. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Educational sessions begin at 10 a.m., Tall Tales and Table Topics contest begins 4 p.m.
