Skyrocketing oil and gas prices and changes in the Illinois utility market give energy users headaches. To provide relief, the Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA)
will host a free forum giving energy users tools and techniques to manage energy and weather risk. The forum will feature Baxter Healthcare, a major energy user, Constellation NewEnergy,
a major energy provider, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the world'ss largest and most diverse financial exchange.
The presentation will take place on Thursday, 24 August 2006 at 5:00 PM at the CME Auditorium, 20 S. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606.
The speakers include:
Doug Bushing, Energy Manager, Baxter Healthcare, who will explain how a company develops a risk management strategy under Illinois's8217;s new utility regulatory structure.
John Harangody, Director of Commodity Products, CME, who will explain energy futures contracts, how they are traded, and how they are used in conjunction with CME weather contracts,
including a central clearing model to offset counterparty risk.
Phil O'sConnor, Ph.D., Vice President, Constellation NewEnergy, who will talk about the recent changes with the Illinois customer rate and relief law, and how this new regulatory
structure for energy has changed the energy industry in Illinois and has increased the need for risk management strategies, which can include trading energy and weather futures
contracts.
The event will be moderated by PRMIA's8217;s James Clarke, former Chief Risk Officer of NiSource and Andrew S. Hyman, the author of Energy Risk Management: A Primer for Utilities (Vienna,
Virginia: Public Utilities Reports, 2006).
