Seattle-based Washington Mutual announced that will terminate around 1,400 jobs, which will be outsourced to Manila and the Philipines.
Those losing their jobs currently represent the telephone sales and service units for mortgage and consumer lending in Jacksonville, Florida and Bothell, Washington.
In Jacksonville, the staff will is expected to be reduced by 550 jobs by the end of September. However, WaMu says that it plans to add another 600 jobs in other areas and is planning on
expanding the Jacksonville facility by 2010.
The Bothell facility will see approximately 850 employees laid off through the closing of its call center at Canyon Park. The center is slated to be closed by July 31.
Other employees may be moved to Bothell, but not into the call center, said WaMu officials.
Last November, WaMu announced that it plans to increase the number of outsourced positions from the 2005 total of 1,600 to 6,000 by the end of next year. Many of the jobs will be moved to
Manila and the Philippines.
The jobs that will stay in the U.S. will be moved to Albion, New York and Milwaukee, Wisconsin -- though they are expected to be only a small amount. Washington Mutual is currently
looking to cut costs through consolidation.
