Arizona State Record Holder Gregg Munck joins SK Guide Service Pro...

December 26, 2004 -- Gregg Munck, the Arizona State Record holder for Walleye, book author, outdoor writer for numerous magazines, and fishing instructor, has joined the fast growing S&K Guide Service Team.

Walleye State Record Broken - Again

Despite being in the grips of an extreme, multi-year regional drought, for the third time in a two-year period the Arizona state record for walleye has been broken by a local angler fishing Show Low Lake.

This fisherman's story also has an unusual side-note to it.

Being an experienced walleye fisherman, Show Low resident Gregg Munck was certain he had just caught the new state record walleye while fishing Show Low Lake in the early evening hours of Sunday, Nov. 17. But while Munck's catch did weigh more than 13 pounds on an official scale, it was still several ounces short of the state record behemoth landed a year ago by Charles Sutherland.

Sutherland's walleye, also caught in Show Low Lake, weighed in at a whopping 13 pound, 11 ounces, breaking the record that Otis Kingsbury had set the previous year, in October of 2000, with a walleye that weighed 12 pounds, 14 ounces.

Disappointed, but not discouraged in achieving a new record, Munck again set out the following Monday evening. Using a homemade jig, he was soon rewarded with a 31-inch walleye, weighing 16 pounds, 2 ounces. Pending official certification by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, Munck's walleye will be the new Arizona state record, breaking the existing record by more than two pounds. Mike Lopez, fisheries program manager in the department's Pinetop office, stated that Show Low Lake has been the place to fish for monster walleye for the past 15 years. "Our annual surveys repeatedly indicate that the lake is dominated by large walleye. Record-size fish are frequently caught in survey nets, and released after measuring."

Earlier this year, a walleye weighing almost 11 pounds was caught at Show Low Lake, and submitted for the Big Fish-of-the Year.

Lopez also noted that nearby Fool Hollow Lake is an up-and-coming walleye fishery. "A 12-pound, 11-ounce walleye was caught in Fool Hollow in September on a gold and black countdown Rapala lure. That lake has been growing large fish for the past five years." Fool Hollow Lake also has its share of large bass. A seven-pound, one-ounce largemouth was caught there in September on a night crawler. Last year, a five-pound smallmouth bass was caught and released, and, in 2000, a six-pound smallmouth was caught and released. Anglers also occasionally catch channel catfish in the 15-20 pound range.

To catch walleyes, Lopez advises using a diving lure, such as a Rapala, or night crawlers fished over rocky structure like the riprap along the Show Low Lake Dam or back in one of the lake arms. Best fishing times are during low light hours in early morning or evening.

He also encourages anglers to not be dismayed by Arizona's drought conditions. "Despite low water conditions in many reservoirs, big fish of all kinds are out there for the catching. I encourage anglers to take advantage of Arizona's diverse fishing opportunities. Anytime someone has a hook in the water, there's always the possibility of a new state record being caught."
