Five Reasons to Whitewater Raft in Maine After Labor Day

River rafting in Maine begins May First and continues daily through early October. Thanks to hydropower dams generating daily water releases, Maine is the only state in the Northeast that can provide water levels for whitewater rafting and kayaking over a five month season.

A survey of outfitters and guests revealed five reasons to take a raft trip in September or early October:

1) Reduced rates-On average the price of a raft trip is discounted 15-30%.

2) Warm Water-Temperatures are in the 60's8217;s after a hot summer.

3) Less Crowded-The tourists have gone back to work and kids back to school.

4) Flora and Fauna-Wildlife is abundant and fall foliage colors are spectacular.

5) Special Dam Releases-Up to 8,000 cubic feet per second on September 9 and 23 on the Kennebec River. And up to 6,000 cfs on the Dead River on September 3, 16 and October 7, 2006.

The rafting industry is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season. In 1976, only 600 people rafted the Kennebec River. In 2006, over 80,000 are expected to raft Maine's8217;s wilderness rivers-the Kennebec, Dead and Penobscot.Outfitters offer a variety of trips including lower river trips for youngsters and seniors, float trips and row-frame trips. Along with these river trips, visitors can participate in other outdoor adventures including whitewater, lake and inflatable kayaking, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, mountain biking, moose and bird watching safaris, ATV tours, paintball and sky-diving. Late season is a popular time for corporate retreats, family reunions and weddings.
