Stepac LA Ltd. announced today the commercial launch of Eco-Xtend's8482;, a new line of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for fresh produce that is both economical and eco-friendly. Eco-Xtend products contain a prodegradant that accelerates degradation of the plastic. From the moment an Eco-Xtend bag is manufactured, it has a shelf life of one year.
Always in tune to our customers, we decided to develop a degradable modified atmosphere product line that not only helps them to cut costs but supports a healthy environment as well,
comments Israel Ben Tzur, StePac CEO. Eco-Xtend is the result of over a year of development and testing.
Complementary to StePac'ss Xtend's174; MA/MH (modified atmosphere/modified humidity) packaging, Eco-Xtend MA bags create the ideal atmospheric condition for the specific fruit or
vegetable inside the bag. This is done by proprietary engineering of Xtend polymers so that the correct balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide is maintained. Xtend technology reduces
the respiration rate and blocks the biosynthesis and action of ethylene. This in turn, slows the aging process and minimizes the loss of sugars and labile vitamins (such as vitamins A and
C), preserving nutritional value and flavor. In addition, elevated carbon dioxide concentrations retard development of decay forming microorganisms.
Unlike many degradable plastics, Eco-Xtend bags have a glossy appearance and smooth feel, making them ideal for retail applications. To date, StePac has qualified Eco-Xtend packaging for
selected produce items including bananas, broccoli, kiwi and pears. We'sve conducted numerous trials both in-house and with customers with excellent results, reports Dr. Gary Ward, StePac
Director of R's38;D. For example, Eco-Xtend bags maintain post-ripened bananas for up to 10 days on the shelf before they reach stage 6. Broccoli can be stored for up to 28 days at
1's218;C (34's218;F), and kiwi and pears for several months at 0's218;C (32's218;F).
