January 16, 2005 -- PT Heinz A.B.C. Indonesia, a major company that produces and markets food products such as soy sauce, tomato ketchup, syrup, juice and sardines under A.B.C. brand,
again donated for the tsunami victims yesterday. Johnny Katio, President Director of PT Heinz Abc Indonesia (P.T. H.A.I.) delivered the cheque worth Rp 1 billion to Mr. Mar'ie Muhammad,
the Chairman of Indonesia Red Cross (I.R.C.) at the I.R.C's headquarters in Jakarta, Jalan Gatot Subroto.
In his address upon delivering the donation, Johnny Katio said : "When the staff of P.T. Heinz Abc Indonesia managed to collect money immediately they knew of the disaster, H.J. Heinz
Foundation was moved by the staff's deep concern. The foundation then authorized a donation in value of USD 200,000 to be channelled for the tsunami victims. A week before, through
"Dompet Peduli T.V." program, the company's staff donated a truckload of goods containing biscuits, sarongs, blankets, maskers and gloves in value of Rp 40 million. The company also
donated a container full of A.B.C. products in value of Rp 160 million for Aceh."Johnny Katio further added : "Approximately 45,000 staff of H.J. Heinz Company worldwide expressed their
condolence to the families of the victims. Although the tsunami struck in the holiday period, they spontaneously gave donations through international organizations in their respective
countries."
Johnny Katio said that as members of greater community, the company's staff felt the sadness of the victims. "I.R.C. as well as the government of Indonesia are suggesting to have the
donation in the form of money and we are aware of the reasons," he added.
The channelling through I.R.C. is based on the consideration of its effectiveness in handling big scale disasters as well as its international reputation. The company doesn't stop at
giving aids for the disaster alone; the remaining fund is slated for the provision of nutritional development of both children and adults in Aceh in the next period. It will work with an
N.G.O. The program will consist of two parts, i.e. first, provision of Sprinkle, a multivitamin and mineral supplement for the growth of children, a similar program is underway in West
and Central Java. The second program is provision of iron-fortified sweet soy sauce, which proved to be effective to decrease incidences of anaemia in mothers. The company managed the
program under cooperation with Helen Keller International Foundation for 1 year in West Java. Both programs are part of the company's corporate social responsibility towards the
Indonesian people.
