Theo Chocolate announces the release of the first Fair Trade certified's8482; Ivory Coast chocolate bar in the United States.
Theo Chocolate is honored to be the first chocolate maker in the United States to produce an origin designated chocolate bar from Ivory Coast Fair Trade certified's8482; beans. Over 40%
of the world's8217;s cacao supply comes from this West African nation that has been riddled with accusations of child and forced labor. While the US chocolate industry and world labor
organizations have released a protocol plan to improve labor practices, their plan has yet to be implemented. Fair Trade Certification offers an immediate alternative solution. To date,
two cooperatives in this region have been certified Fair Trade, which strictly prohibits slave and forced child labor. Theo Chocolate proudly buys the cacao beans used in the Ivory Coast
bar from one of these cooperatives, Coopaga. All of the cacao purchased by Theo Chocolate must meet strict company standards for social and environmental responsibility.
Calling out the origin of the cacao bean growing region is an emerging trend among premium chocolate makers. The wine and coffee industries have heightened consumer recognition of the
role of terroir or 's8220;place's8221; on the flavor of food products. Chocolate is following suit by isolating beans from specific geographies. Theo Chocolate is releasing two origin
bars at this time, the Ivory Coast bar, which is 75% cocoa content, and a bar from Ghana with 84% cocoa content. The Ghana is also Fair Trade certified's8482;. The other origin bars
coming from Theo this year will be from Venezuela and Madagascar.
Theo Chocolate produces premium, organic, Fair Trade Certified's8482; and specialty chocolate under two brand names, Theo and 3400 Phinney Chocolate Factory. The company was established
in 2005 and began producing chocolate in March of 2006. For additional information please contact Pamela Hinckley @ 206-632-5100.
