5 Tips for Better Business Entertaining



Hosting a client lunch or dinner, especially if many clients are involved, can be a daunting experience.



The biggest 'smistake's many people make is to book a reservation at a restaurant with a hot name or celebrity chef, show up at the appointed time, and expect everything to go smoothly.



Usually, it does -- this is why the restaurant has such buzz in the first place.



Yet when your career or a deal is on the line, it makes a great deal of sense to do some research before deciding on a restaurant.



Here are some tips that can serve you well.

1. In an ideal world, you would dine at the restaurant before or simply visit it before the mad crush. Introduce yourself to the host, explaining that you'sll be hosting a business dinner and would like to book a table.



If appropriate, ask if your party is big enough for a private room, and if there'ss a charge for this. Ask to visit the private room.



2. During this visit, ask for a copy of the wine list (or have it faxed to you if you don'st have time to visit). If you have a strict limit on your expense account, but want to appear generous and knowledgeable about wine in front of your guests, ask to speak with the sommelier during this pre-visit.



Tell her that while you don'st know the preferences of your guests or what they'sll be ordering, you'sd like to order wine(s) in a certain price range. The sommelier should be able to make some general suggestions, or if she will be working on the night you'sll be dining, she may be able to make suggestions knowing your price range at the table.



3. Look around the room and, if you find a particular table especially attractive or in a quieter part of the room, ask if you can reserve it.



4. During this pre-visit, make it a point to remember the names of the host and sommelier.



5. When it'ss time for your business dinner, you'sll find that your familiarity with the restaurant, the menu, the host and sommelier, will enable you to focus on your guests and the business at hand.
